Does a no trespassing sign make trespassing enforceable?

Posting notice is often part of what makes enforcement possible, but the rules differ substantially between jurisdictions. Some specify sign wording, size, colour, lettering height, spacing along a boundary or mounting height, and some require a sign at every point of entry. Treat signage as one part of establishing notice and check the requirements that apply where your property sits rather than relying on a generic sign alone.

Where to place them

  • At every normal point of entry: gates, driveways and footpaths
  • At intervals along the boundary so one is visible from any approach
  • At eye level, with sight lines kept clear of vegetation
  • Facing outward, readable before someone crosses the boundary

Frequently asked questions

What size should a no trespassing sign be?

300x450mm suits most boundary and driveway use and stays legible from a moving vehicle. Smaller 200x300mm signs work on gates and doors where people are already close. Some jurisdictions set a minimum size or lettering height, so check locally before ordering in volume.

Can I add my property name or a penalty notice?

Yes. Use the designer to add your own wording, including property name, ordinance reference or a contact number, with a live preview before you order.

Which material lasts outdoors?

Aluminium. It will not rust, warp or fade and handles years of weather. Rigid plastic is a lower-cost option for sheltered positions. Avoid paper or card for any exterior use, including laminated printouts.

What is the difference from a private property sign?

A private property sign states ownership; a no trespassing sign states that entry is prohibited. Many sites use both, and some wording combines the two on a single sign.
